The vehicles were equipped with brake light software intended for foreign markets. Under heavy braking, the brake lights flash instead of remaining illuminated.

Hyundai is recalling 38,331 Sonata vehicles due to issues with brake lights flashing when they should be steady. The recall affects the 2024 model year Sonatas and centers around a software issue intended for non-US markets that causes brake lights to flash instead of illuminating properly. Vehicle owners will be notified starting October 2023, and dealers will install the correct software at no cost to the owner.

The models in question were manufactured between October 18, 2023, and June 12, 2024. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a campaign number for the recall: 24V583000. According to Hyundai's statement, there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to this software fault so far.

Hyundai's incorrect software installation caused the issue. The affected systems were designed to meet specifications required in foreign markets where flashing brake lights are necessary during heavy braking at speeds over 30 mph. In the US market, regulations require brake lights that remain illuminated steadily under similar conditions.

The NHTSA has advised that the unpredictable flashing could confuse drivers in trailing vehicles, increasing traffic safety risks.
