Some of these cars are over 20 years old now. This makes the airbags even more likely to break during a crash. The main problem is that Takata inflators can blow up too forcefully, sending sharp metal pieces flying at drivers and passengers.
These faulty airbags have caused at least 27 deaths and hundreds of injuries in the U.S. alone. Because of this huge issue, car makers have had to recall 19.2 million vehicles in the country. The problem was so big that it forced Takata to file for bankruptcy.
Ford says it has reached out to 95% of its U.S. customers about this issue. The company has made over 121 million attempts to contact owners through letters, emails, phone calls, and text messages. They've even made more than 1 million visits to people's homes.
Globally, this recall affects 765,600 Ford and Lincoln vehicles, with 374,300 of those in the U.S.
If you own one of these cars, you should get it fixed as soon as possible. The good news is that the repair won't cost you anything. To check if your car needs fixing, Ford owners can visit www.ford.com/support/recalls/, and Mazda owners can go to https://www.mazdarecalls.com.
