The floor mats, made by Hope Valley Industries, are all-weather mats. They weren't changed to fit with a new design in the carpet on the driver's side. Buick thinks about 5% of the cars might have this issue, which means around 2,450 vehicles could be affected.
Dealers will check the floor mats in these cars. If they find a problem, they'll either get rid of the mat or change it so it doesn't interfere with the gas pedal. This might mean cutting off part of the mat. Buick will give customers their money back for the original cost of the floor mat.
So far, Buick has heard nine complaints about this issue. Luckily, no one has been hurt, and there haven't been any crashes because of it. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the gas pedal might get trapped under the floor mat, which can lead to the car speeding up on its own.
GM recall number is N242466850.
This problem brings to mind a similar issue from almost 20 years ago. Back then, Toyota had to recall nearly four million vehicles because their floor mats were causing the gas pedal to get stuck. That situation turned out to be much more serious, leading to a crash that killed four people.
