The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provided information about the recall. BMW will notify owners in October about the problem and the steps they need to take.
The recall affects many BMW models made between 2012 and 2018. These include popular cars like the X1, Z4, 528i, 328i, and X5, among others.
The water pump's electrical connector doesn't seal well enough. Over time, fluid can get into the electrical plug connector. This could cause a short circuit and, in rare cases, a fire.
To fix the problem, BMW dealers will:
1. Check the water pumps and plug connectors 2. Replace parts if needed 3. Install a shield to keep fluid away from the positive crankcase ventilation system's intake air house
BMW will do all this work for free at their authorized centers.
This recall is a big deal for BMW. It covers many different models across several years. While the chance of a fire is low, BMW wants to make sure all affected cars get fixed to keep drivers safe.
