Toyota's Century GRMN SUV is moving from concept to reality. Chairman Akio Toyoda has confirmed the high-performance variant of the luxury SUV will go into production, first for Japan and later for China.

The news came during a meeting with Century owners from China, where Toyoda was introducing the standard Century SUV to the market. When asked about plans for a GRMN-branded version, Toyoda said:

"The Century I own is the only GRMN there is for now. Next, I want to make a GRMN that many people from around the world can ride."

He added that the Century GRMN will come to China, but customers will "need to wait a bit."

Toyota first showed off the Century GRMN as a one-off last year. The prototype sported GR emblems, a redesigned body kit with exposed carbon fiber, optional sliding doors, and 22-inch black alloy wheels. It made an appearance at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2024 as part of "Morizo's Beloved Cars Collection."

While specific details about the prototype remain under wraps, the production version will likely get upgrades to the suspension, brakes, and engine. These changes will put the Century GRMN at the top of Toyota Gazoo Racing's performance lineup.

The standard Century SUV comes with a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid engine that produces 406 horsepower (303 kW/412 PS). It uses an e-CVT gearbox and Toyota's E-Four Advanced AWD system.

With the GRMN treatment, Toyota aims to compete with high-end SUVs like the Aston Martin DBX707, Lamborghini Urus, and Mercedes-AMG G63.

The Century GRMN will hit Japanese roads first before making its way to China and possibly other markets. This move shows Toyota's commitment to expanding its luxury and performance offerings on a global scale.
