BMW M Mixed Reality system turns the car into a controller in a 3D environment, creating an immersive experience for drivers.
The technology uses precise GPS positioning and real-time data transmission to connect the car's movements with a virtual reality headset. This setup works with various BMW M models, including both gas-powered and electric vehicles.
BMW first showed off this mixed reality tech at a tech summit in Lisbon back in November 2022. Since last fall, drivers have been able to try it out at the BMW M Driving Experience in Maisach, Germany. The company also started a pilot project at its Performance Driving School in California in 2023.
Now, BMW's adding new features to make the experience even more exciting. Drivers will soon be able to race against each other virtually in two separate cars. Friends can even watch the race live through virtual reality headsets like Meta Quest or Apple Vision Pro, using personalized avatars.
There's also a new "Rooftop Circuit" where drivers in a BMW M135 dodge virtual obstacles and collect coins in a futuristic city skyline.
The company sees potential for this tech beyond just fun driving experiences. It could be used in vehicle development, professional training, and even to help improve driver assistance systems.
BMW plans to show off these new features in Lisbon later this year. They're also looking at expanding the technology to work with upcoming models like the new BMW M5.
It's not just BMW getting in on the action. MINI is also planning to offer its customers a similar mixed reality driving experience in the future.
