Mercedes-AMG is working on its first SUV built entirely in-house. The company will create a fullsize electric model using its own AMG.EA platform.

AMG already offers a beefed-up version of the Mercedes EQE SUV. But now, they're taking a different approach. Instead of upgrading existing Benz models, they're developing a separate high-performance SUV from the ground up. This new vehicle will be fullsize, more like the GLS than the GLE.

The 2022 Vision AMG concept gave us a sneak peek at what future bespoke electric AMGs might look like. The new SUV will likely share some features with the second-generation GT 4-Door Coupe, which will also be all-electric.

AMG's focus is clear: "It's AMG first, all-electric second." They're aiming to compete with other high-performance electric SUVs like the Lotus Eletre and Porsche's upcoming Cayenne EV.

The new SUV will use axial flux motors developed by Yasa, a company Mercedes-Benz now owns. These motors are disc-shaped and weigh about 24 kilograms (53 pounds) each. They can put out up to 480 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. AMG claims these motors offer "substantially more power than conventional electric motors."

There's a chance the SUV could use four of these motors - two for each axle. If that happens, we might see horsepower in the four-digit range. The battery pack will be slimmer and more efficient, with 40% increased density compared to regular packs.

The SUV will use an 800V electrical system, which allows for ultra-fast charging. We can expect it to hit the market around 2026, following the GT 4-Door Coupe replacement's arrival in 2025.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but it's safe to say it'll be on the high end, likely more than the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV.
