Ford's iconic Fiesta model could get a second life thanks to a collaboration with Volkswagen. The two companies are considering new co-operation opportunities after successful experiences with the Explorer and Capri models on VW's ID.4 and ID.5 platforms, Auto Express reported.

The last Ford Fiesta was released in July 2023. Since then, the compact hatchback's place in the US brand's European line-up has been vacant.

Martin Sander, Volkswagen's head of marketing and a former top executive at Ford Europe, described the two companies' joint work on electric models as "very, very, very successful". He also did not rule out new joint projects in the future. This could mean a new generation Fiesta on the MEB Entry platform, which will form the basis of the future VW ID.1 and ID.2.

An electric Fiesta could then get a range of up to 280 miles (450 kilometres) and support for 125kW fast charging.

Meanwhile, Ford also has its own electric vehicle platform, which is being developed by the Skunkworks team in California. However, it is known to be aimed more at a mid-size pickup truck rather than compact cars like the Fiesta.

More clarity on Ford's strategy is expected in the coming months. Last August, the Blue Oval promised to reveal its plans for electrification, technology and investment.

Meanwhile, the life cycle of another iconic Ford model is coming to an end. The Ford Focus will end production this November and the next generation of the model is not expected in the near future.
