Volkswagen Multivan and its camper equivalent California have received all-wheel drive thanks to the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with 245 hp (180 kW). According to the manufacturer, the electric range reaches 95 kilometers.

The powertrain includes a 1.5 TSI evo2 gasoline engine, a six-speed automatic DSG gearbox, and two electric motors (one at the front, the other at the rear). Together they allow the van to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds. The California is less energy-efficient due to its additional weight.

The 19.7 kWh battery can be charged at a rate of up to 50 kW when connected to a fast DC charging station or up to 11 kW when connected to an AC source.

Volkswagen says that the PHEV system operates on electric power as often as possible. The front motor takes priority over the rear or gasoline engine. The latter is mainly used to generate electricity, driving the wheels only when the battery is depleted or when low gear is activated.

The rear motor is also disconnected from the transmission at speeds over 130 km/h to enhance energy efficiency.

The new all-wheel drive system has replaced the previous PHEV option based on a 1.4-liter gasoline engine in the Multivan.

In the UK, prices for the new VW Multivan PHEV start at £54,525 (€63,517). The California starts at £71,295 (€83,053).
