The chassis of the new Volkswagen Amarok for South America will be based on the Chinese pickup Maxus Interstellar X, also known in Australia as the LDV Terron 9. The project is being implemented in partnership with SAIC.
As reported by Motor1 Brasil, Volkswagen representatives recently held a meeting with the Argentine government, during which they confirmed: the new Amarok Hybrid will be produced at the factory in General Pacheco. The production site was previously announced, but now the hybrid version of the model has been officially confirmed.
Maxus Interstellar X
The new pickup is expected to have dimensions similar to the Maxus Interstellar X (shown above): length - 5500 mm, wheelbase - 3300 mm. Some body and interior elements will likely be unified, but VW is preparing a unique design for the front end. The sketch features a lighting strip across the width, a compact grille, a massive bumper, and a sculpted hood.
The Chinese pickup is offered either with a 2.5-liter turbo diesel or in a fully electric version Maxus eTerron 9. The common frame platform for all models allows the installation of both conventional internal combustion engines and hybrid or electric powertrains. The hybrid option will serve as the basis for the new VW model in South America.
This Amarok will be exclusive to South America, while the current Amarok, based on the Ford Ranger, will continue to be produced in South Africa.
