The decision was announced at a meeting in the residence of the government of the Czech Republic by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Minister of Industry Lukáš Vlček, and President of Toyota Motor Europe Yoshihiro Nakata.
To start the production of the new model, Toyota will invest approximately €680 million in the expansion and modernization of the TMMCZ plant. The facility will expand from 152,000 to 173,000 square meters, and new welding and painting shops, as well as a battery assembly line, will be built. The Czech government will allocate up to €64 million for the establishment of battery production.
It is likely to be a compact crossover, but Toyota has not yet revealed any details about the model. It is currently unknown when the production of the electric vehicle will begin. According to preliminary data, it is expected to start in 2028.
Currently, the TMMCZ plant produces Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid - a total of about 220,000 cars per year. The introduction of the electric vehicle will increase the site’s potential and create new jobs, while most of the components will be sourced from Czech suppliers.
The plant in Kolín has been operating since 2002 and has already produced over 4.5 million cars. Today it is one of the largest employers in the region with 3,200 employees. From 2024, it will also house the first European Toyota mega logistics hub, serving dealers in Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
