The new Renault Megane and Renault Scenic are now only available in electric versions. However, their sales are not reaching the planned targets, so Renault is preparing to return internal combustion engines as part of hybrid powertrains.

According to the new CEO of Renault Group, Francois Provost, a new generation of Megane and Scenic with the option to choose between fully electric and hybrid drives will be introduced by the end of the decade.

The new platform will unite future generations of Megane, Scenic, as well as Austral, Espace, and Rafale, which are currently only available with hybrid systems.

Renault does not intend to completely abandon electric Megane and Scenic cars but wants to attract new buyers by offering an expanded choice of power units. Specifically for those not yet ready to switch entirely to electricity.

In addition, Renault management does not rule out the possibility of models with range extenders and plug-in hybrids. The benchmark could be the Nissan E-Force powertrain, where the petrol engine works solely to charge the battery, while the electric motor is responsible for driving the wheels.

And while the return of the petrol engine is still in preparation, Renault plans an interim step — updating the Megane. A facelift of the model is expected, as well as the appearance of a version with an increased battery. Currently, the maximum capacity is 60 kWh, with a range of 459 km. Scenic has a larger battery — 87 kWh and a range of up to 615 km.
