CEO Volkswagen Group China Ralf Brandstätter published the first official photo of the camouflaged prototype model ID. Era on LinkedIn.

According to the terminology adopted in China, the novelty is classified as an extended range electric vehicle (EREV), where the gasoline engine acts as a generator, while the wheels are driven by an electric motor.

ID. Era is a joint development of Volkswagen and China's SAIC. The picture shows a two-tier front lighting system and a thin LED strip across the entire width of the front. The integration of the lidar at the top of the windshield indicates that the model will be equipped with advanced driver assistance systems.

Notably, Volkswagen retained the built-in door handles, contrary to the promising car safety requirements in China. The wide wheel arches, roof rails, and multi-element wheel disks suggest that the production model will largely retain the design of the early concept.

Details of the interior and technical data have not yet been disclosed. However, it can be assumed that the model is built on the SAIC unit base for EREV. Comparable models such as the IM LS6 use an 800-volt architecture combined with a 66 kWh battery and two electric motors with a total output of up to 500 kW. Whether ID. Era will receive a similar configuration will become known later.

According to preliminary information, production of the VW ID. Era may start in April 2026.
