Volvo is preparing a comprehensive over-the-air software update. The changes will be available for 2.5 million cars produced since 2020.

All Volvos with the Android Automotive operating system will receive the update that was introduced in 2020 with the XC40 Recharge (now EX40). These vehicles will switch to the new Volvo Car UX interface already used in the EX30, EX90, and the recently introduced EX60.

Originally, the update was planned to start last year, but it was postponed for further development. Now, according to Anders Bell, Volvo's head of technology, the software is in the final testing phase. The launch is expected in the coming months.

Bell described the project as "one of the largest OTA updates in the world" and emphasized that its goal is to "modernize" already released cars. He stated that the ability to perform simple updates is a key advantage of connected vehicles. In this way, they can remain up-to-date much longer than before.

The interface of updated vehicles will look almost identical to that of the EX90, but with adjustments for less powerful processors and smaller screens.

In addition to the interface change, the Google Assistant can be replaced by the more advanced Gemini voice assistant. However, Volvo has not yet stated which models will be compatible with this technology.

With Gemini, owners will be able to communicate with the vehicle in a freer form. Volvo explains that the system understands natural language better: It can be used to dictate and translate messages, ask questions about the user manual, or clarify details about the route and destination.

The company emphasizes that such a form of communication reduces the driver's cognitive load and helps to be less distracted from the road, increasing the safety of all occupants.
