Including the UK and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland), the gap was more noticeable: electric cars captured 26.3% of the market compared to 21.7% for gasoline models.
Over the entire 2025 year, gasoline cars maintained leadership with 26.1% of the market compared to 19.5% for EVs in the EU+UK+EFTA region. Meanwhile, the share of gasoline cars decreased by 6.9 percentage points over the year, while electric cars increased by 4.1 percentage points compared to 2024.
The share of diesel cars continues to shrink: from 10.4% in 2024 to 7.7% last year. For comparison, ten years ago, diesel occupied more than 50% of the market. The decline began after the "diesel scandal" around the Volkswagen Group and the abandonment of such engines by automakers in mass segments.
The most popular type of powertrain in Europe became the hybrid – 34.4% of the market. Plug-in hybrids surpassed diesel for the first time in history, capturing 9.6%.
Among electric vehicles, the sales leader in Europe in 2025 remained the Tesla Model Y – 151,331 cars, despite a sales drop of 28%. This is followed by the Skoda Elroq (94,106 units), Tesla Model 3 (86,261 units), and Renault 5 E-Tech (81,517 units).
