According to VDA, in 2025, 1.22 million electric vehicles and PHEVs were produced in Germany, setting a national record and exceeding the 2024 figure by 15%. The increase in production in Germany reflects the overall trend in the European market: electric vehicle sales in Europe increased by almost 30% last year, to approximately 2.6 million units.
China remains the world leader by a large margin, producing 16.1 million NEV category vehicles in a year, including electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, range extender models, and hydrogen vehicles.
In total, 4.15 million passenger cars were assembled in Germany over the year, which is 2% more than in 2024. At the same time, the production structure has shifted significantly towards electrification: almost 30% of all vehicles produced were fully electric, and considering PHEVs, the share of electrified vehicles reached about 40%.
Volkswagen remains the largest manufacturer and seller of electric vehicles in Europe. In 2025, the brand sold almost 275,000 electric vehicles, increasing sales by 56% compared to the previous year. Tesla, on the other hand, reduced its European sales by 27% to 238,765 vehicles.
