The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China plans to require car manufacturers to equip new cars with physical controls for key functions.

Recently, Chinese electric vehicles and hybrids have adopted minimalist interiors with a large central screen where most functions are controlled. In some cases, an additional screen is used for the front passenger. Now, the authorities intend to reduce dependence on touch interfaces.

Changes to the national standard GB4094—2016 “Labels for Vehicle Controls, Indicators, and Tell-tales” introduce new types and technical requirements for physical control elements. The main goal is to provide access to key functions without the need to be distracted by the screen and with the ability for tactile “blind” control.

The requirement is expected to apply only to new models starting from July 1, 2026.

Functions that will require physical controls

Lighting:

  • turn signal switches
  • hazard warning lights
  • horn

Transmission:

  • P / R / N / D modes (switching only via screen will be prohibited)

Driver Assistance Systems:

  • separate button for activating ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

Safety and emergency functions:

  • wipers
  • glass heating and ventilation
  • power windows
  • Advanced Emergency Call System (AECS)
  • electric vehicle power-off button

Technical requirements

The document also sets parameters for the mentioned controls:

  • minimum active area — at least 10×10 mm
  • fixed location
  • usable without visual control
  • presence of tactile or audio feedback
  • maintenance of basic function operability in case of system failure or power loss

Work on updating the standard has been underway since 2023. Major car manufacturers and research organizations, including the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen, BYD, and Great Wall Motor, participated in the discussion. The draft document has already been prepared and will soon be published for public comment.
