Rivian founded an experimental development division — RAD

Rivian introduced a division called RAD — Rivian Adventure Department. It is a public formalization of the engineering team involved in the development of extreme characteristics of the brand's models.

The most powerful versions of the Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S with a quad-motor powertrain are distinguished by their on-road dynamics and serious off-road capabilities. The company decided to formalize this direction in analogy with Mercedes-AMG or BMW M.

The chief engineer of Rivian R1, Luke Lynch, noted that the RAD division is responsible for maximizing the potential of cars by testing them in challenging conditions — from climbing Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to participating in the desert Rebelle Rally.

According to him, competitions are just part of the process. The main goal is a comprehensive check of all systems, components, and algorithms. Testing in harsh conditions allows pushing the limits of the capabilities of electric motors, the thermal regulation system, suspension, and software to the edge.

Rivian emphasizes that the result of such work will be a balanced car, and the introduction of new features will be an additional bonus. Whether the formation of the RAD division will lead to the emergence of special editions or new versions of models is not yet specified.
