An exceptionally rare 1979 Alpina B6 with some interesting additions is up for auction on Bring a Trailer.

When we hear the name Alpina, the imagination usually paints huge autobahn liners based on the 7 or 8 series. But the roots of the Buchloe brand are deeply embedded in motorsports. The company's early models were as uncompromising as their modern counterparts are refined. A specimen recently appeared at auction on Bring a Trailer that reminds us of those times.

Instead of Restoration - Hot Tuning

We're talking about a 1979 Alpina B6. It's the 66th example out of only 533 units produced. It's based on the BMW 3 Series with the E21 body. The factory version of the B6 left the atelier’s gates with a 2.8-liter inline-six borrowed from the then 528i. Alpina masters added Mahle pistons, raised the compression ratio, and achieved a solid 200 horsepower.

However, in 2005, the owner of this car decided that authenticity is good, but power is better. The original unit was replaced by a 3.8-liter M30 series engine, prepared by American workshop Metric Mechanic. Now, there are about 285 horsepower under the hood. All this power goes to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

Blue Instead of Brown

Changes affected not only the underhood space. The car was repainted. It originally left the factory in a rare Topaz Brown color, but now flaunts a Tanzanite Blue shade. Is the loss of the rare color regrettable? Perhaps. But the blue body combined with classic multi-spoke Alpina wheels looks exceptionally striking.

Inside, it's classic: Recaro seats with characteristic blue-green stitching. The suspension has also been invigorated with Bilstein dampers and H&R springs, which, combined with the powerful engine, turns the classic model into a true projectile.

Price and Meaning Questions

This car is a great example of how modifications affect market value. In 2021, the car was already put up for sale, but the maximum bid of $42,250 didn't satisfy the seller. For comparison: a completely original Alpina B6 with higher mileage of 120,000 km sold at auction in 2024 for $106,000.
