Volkswagen opened orders for the electric ID. Polo in Germany, but the starting price turned out to be higher than expected.

Volkswagen has finally launched the online configurator for the new ID. Polo. However, the expected price tag of €25,000 for the base version is not yet available. At the start of sales, only the top version is available, which managed to outprice the higher-class Volkswagen ID.3.

Currently, prices for the ID. Polo start at €33,800. Even with the manufacturer's discount of €3,000, the final amount is €30,800. For comparison: the updated ID.3 Neo hatchback costs from €30,000 after all discounts. The base ID. Polo Trend version with 85 kW power and a smaller battery is promised to be added only in July.

Technical Specifications

Volkswagen announced four powertrain options for the ID. Polo. Interestingly, they all are based on the new APP290 electric motor. This means the torque is identical for all versions - 290 Nm. The difference lies only in software power limitation and battery capacity.

  • 85 kW and 99 kW: will get an LFP battery with a capacity of 37 kWh (range about 300 km).
  • 155 kW: equipped with an NMC battery of 52 kWh (range 454 km).
  • GTI (166 kW): top version with the same 52 kWh battery but better dynamics.

The 155 kW version, which is currently available in the configurator, accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 160 km/h.

Equipment and Interior Space

You can now choose between two equipment levels: Life and Style. With Life, the buyer gets 17-inch wheels, LED optics with high beam assist, adaptive cruise control (ACC), a rearview camera, and a 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen. The Style version adds matrix headlights, illuminated door handles, sports seats, and dual-zone climate control.

The practicality of the novelty is surprising. Despite its compact size, the trunk volume is from 441 to 1,240 liters. This is even more than the larger ID.3 (383 liters) if you do not fold the rear seats.

Competitive Environment

On the market, the ID. Polo will face tough competition. The main competitor is considered to be the Renault 5, though the French offering gives a maximum of 110 kW power. On the other hand, there is the Cupra Raval, built on the same platform, but it starts at €38,600. The most expensive in the segment remains the Alpine A290 with a price tag of €42,200.
