Volkswagen has put the GTI badge on an electric car for the first time, revealing the ID. Polo GTI at the Nürburgring 24-hour race on May 15. The compact hot hatch produces 223 hp / 166 kW, starts at around €39,000 (roughly $42,000 pre-tax) in Germany, and is headed to Europe — with no US launch confirmed, per Motor1.
Powertrain and performance
The front-wheel-drive APP290 motor delivers 223 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen quotes 0–60 mph in roughly 6.3 seconds (based on the 6.8-second 0–100 km/h figure) and a 109-mph top speed. A 52-kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery provides up to 263 miles on the WLTP cycle — the EU range-test standard, typically 10–15% more optimistic than EPA ratings, so expect real-world figures closer to 220–230 miles.
One hardware detail stands out: the ID. Polo GTI carries a VAQ electronic locking differential — a multi-plate clutch system that redistributes torque between the front wheels under cornering load, the same type used on the Golf GTI. That's a meaningful addition for a small EV, and it works alongside standard adaptive DCC suspension (electronically controlled dampers), 19-inch wheels, and enlarged brakes. The car weighs 3,395 lb.

DC fast charging tops out at 105 kW, and VW says a 10-to-80-percent charge takes about 24 minutes. AC charging supports up to 11 kW. The car uses CCS2 — the European connector standard, not the CCS1 or NACS connectors found on US-market vehicles.
Inside and out
The cabin leans on GTI tradition: tartan sport seats, red stitching throughout, a red accent stripe across the dash, and the GTI logo stitched into headrests. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen are standard. A retro display mode recreates the look of a first-generation Golf's gauges — a novelty, but a well-executed one. Cargo space grows to 15.6 cubic feet, up from the standard ID. Polo's 12.4.

Exterior cues include the classic GTI red stripe across the front grille, matrix LED headlights, a rear roof spoiler with a center channel, and a full-width LED taillight strip. Rear door handles are tucked into the C-pillars to mimic a three-door look on what is actually a five-door body.

What this means for US shoppers
VW is clearly prioritizing affordable EV growth in Europe over expanding into the US market, where Section 301 tariffs on Chinese-made components and the current trade environment complicate small-car economics. The ID. Polo GTI has no confirmed US timeline. The closest available alternative stateside remains the Golf GTI — still internal-combustion, starting around $32,000 — or the ID.4 for buyers who want a VW EV.
Germany pre-orders open in autumn 2026 at approximately €39,000. The UK launch follows in 2027 at pricing yet to be confirmed, per Volkswagen UK. A rumored higher-output Clubsport variant — said to approach 280 hp — has not been officially confirmed.
