After the creation of the Stellantis group in 2021, there were constant rumors about the possible sale or closure of some of the group's brands. Lancia and DS Automobiles, which have been showing weak sales for years, were especially often under threat.

The new strategic plan FaSTLAne 2030 confirms: both brands remain part of the group. However, Stellantis now calls them "special brands" - although what exactly is meant by this term, the company is very cautious in explaining so far.

Fiat will manage Lancia, Citroen - DS

Within the new structure, Fiat will be responsible for the development of Lancia, and Citroen - for DS Automobiles.

No specific details about future models have been disclosed by Stellantis yet. Nevertheless, the head of the group Antonio Filosa stated that each brand in the group will have a clear role in implementing the FaSTLAne 2030 plan.

The plan itself involves the launch of 110 new or updated models by the end of the decade. Some of them will obviously be released under the Lancia and DS brands.

Premium versions of mass-market models

It seems Stellantis does not plan to invest in fully independent platforms for the two problematic brands.

Most likely, Lancia will become a more expensive and prestigious version of Fiat models, while DS will continue to develop as a premium alternative to Citroen. This helps reduce development and production costs - especially considering the small sales volumes.

At the same time, the group emphasizes that Lancia and DS will remain separate brands, not turning into trim levels within Fiat or Citroen.

Sales remain weak

Statistics from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) show that the situation for both brands remains difficult.

In 2025, sales of Lancia and Chrysler, which are combined in the ACEA statistics, fell by 64% to 11,754 vehicles. At the same time, the first quarter of 2026 has already shown some recovery: registrations increased by 15.5% and reached 4,072 vehicles.

For DS, the situation looks worse. In 2025, the brand fell by 22.5% to 29,042 vehicles. The decline continued in the first quarter of 2026: minus 17.1% and only 6,771 sales.

Stellantis divides brands by level of importance

The new plan also reveals the internal hierarchy of brands within the group. The four global brands of Stellantis now include:

  • Fiat;
  • Peugeot;
  • Jeep;
  • Ram.

Citroen has been moved to the category of regional brands along with Opel/Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, and Chrysler.

In this context, Lancia and DS effectively gain a separate status - something in between niche and image-building projects within the group.

So far, Stellantis avoids specifics about how exactly the "special brands" will look. But it seems that the group is trying to find a way to preserve historic brands without having to invest too much money into them.
