BYD's plug-in hybrid pickup, the Shark DMO, has achieved a maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP ahead of its planned roll-out across Europe.

The crash-test authority awarded the double-cab pickup 82% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupants, 74% for vulnerable road users, and 87% in the safety assist category. Assessors highlighted the protection provided to six- and ten-year-old child dummies during side barrier impact testing, as well as its Child Presence Detection system. The autonomous emergency braking system showed good reactions to cyclists and adequate performance when detecting motorcyclists. The result adds to nine Euro NCAP evaluations BYD has secured since entering the European passenger car market in 2022.

Off-road chassis and hybrid punch

Underneath, the Shark brings BYD's Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) architecture to Europe. Unlike the brand's road-focused DM-i models, the Shark uses a rugged ladder-frame chassis that integrates a 32.2kWh Blade Battery directly into the structure using Cell-to-Chassis technology. An intelligent all-wheel-drive system manages power across four distinct terrain settings: sand, mud, snow, and gravel.

The Shark has two electric motors. The front one produces 170 kW (231hp) and 310Nm, the rear one 204hp and 340Nm, for a total system output of 436hp and 650Nm. That is enough to take the five-seat pickup from 0–100km/h in 5.7 seconds.

Range and European timing

The battery gives you an electric-only range of up to 90km under the WLTP test cycle. With a full fuel tank as well, total driving range reaches up to 675km. An 11kW AC onboard charger refills the pack from 15% to 100% in just over three hours, while 55kW DC charging takes it from 30% to 80% in around 21 minutes. Equipment includes vehicle-to-load capability, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen with navigation, and a 10.25-inch digital driver display.

Following its European presentation at the Paris Motor Show, the Shark goes on sale in selected European markets within the next three months, with a broader roll-out across the continent planned for the first half of 2027. In the UK, orders are already open from £47,290 (about €55,890) including VAT, and first deliveries are due in the fourth quarter of 2026.
