BMW, including the BMW M division, is gradually shifting to the production of hybrids and electric vehicles. The latest M-model with an internal combustion engine without an electric addition will be the new BMW M2.

The BMW M2 Coupe (G87) will be a boon for fans of internal combustion engine sports cars without electric hybrid add-ons. About this German portal Bimmer Today told  Head of BMW M Division Frank van Mil.

“The BMW M2 will definitely be a purist car with a straight-six and rear-wheel drive. We will see a growing electrification of other vehicles, in various forms, from the 48-volt electrical system and plug-in hybrids to all-electric drives. From this point of view, the M2 will be the last M with a pure internal combustion engine, as well as without electrification options, such as a 48-volt on-board network,” he explained.

Moreover, the new M2 will be offered not only with automatic, but also with a manual transmission.

The BMW M2 G87 has not yet been officially presented, although it has been spotted in spy photos and teasers from the manufacturer. According to rumors, the younger brother of the M3 and M4 models will receive a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with an output of about 450 hp. The coupe will be rear-wheel drive, and the car will be produced at the BMW plant in Mexico.

The debut of the new BMW M2 is expected before the end of 2022.
