At 1,000 units a week, Tesla's car assembly plant near Berlin is now capable of producing about 50,000 cars a year. This is a good indicator for an enterprise that started operating this spring, but 10 times less than the planned capacity.
The Tesla Giga Berlin plant was supposed to open back in 2021 if it weren't for problems getting all the permits from local authorities. As a result, mass production started only in March 2022.
At the time of the start of production, the level of 1000 cars per week was planned to be reached in April. However, by that time, Tesla was only able to organize an assembly of 350 cars a week in the vicinity of Berlin due to some problems in the paint shop.
Now Tesla Giga Berlin only produces Tesla Model Y Performance crossovers with cylindrical batteries type 2170 manufactured by LG Energy Solution. Batteries are shipped to Europe from China, where Tesla also has a separate "Gigafactory" near Shanghai.
Tesla Giga Berlin produced 8,865 Tesla Model Ys in its first three months of operation. This is only half of what Tesla Giga Shanghai produced in the same period after opening. However, in China, Model 3 and Model Y were immediately put into production.
