Oleksiy Reznikov reported about the beginning of the delivery of Gepard anti-aircraft systems on the news marathon of Ukrainian television. It happened today, July 25.
The Minister of Defense of Ukraine emphasized that three Gepard installations have arrived from Germany and they are already at the disposal of the military together with "tens of thousands of rounds". In total, there will be fifteen such cars in the first batch.
Gepard is an anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery installation on a tracked chassis from the Leopard 1 tank. It has been produced since 1976 by the Krauss-Maffei company in cooperation with other companies.
Gepard is designed to protect armored columns on the march and stationary objects from attacks from helicopters and airplanes at low and ultra-low altitudes day and night under any weather conditions and in conditions of intense radio-electronic countermeasures of the enemy.
The Gepard can fire at a rate of up to 1,000 rounds per minute. However, in real conditions, it fires in short bursts adapted to the target.
By information Lübecker Nachrichten Ukrainian military is learning to work on Gepard installations at the training grounds of the German armed forces in Schleswig-Holstein. At least 100 servicemen were reported.
Spiegel earlier reported, that special 35-mm projectiles for anti-aircraft installations will be manufactured by a company from Norway, since the Bundeswehr's own stocks are limited, and the supply of ammunition to Ukraine from South America has been blocked by the manufacturing country Switzerland.
