Norwegians will say goodbye to models such as Golf, Passat and Tiguan before residents of other European countries.

Volkswagen will stop all sales of petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles in Norway from 1 January 2024. Instead of cars with internal combustion engines, the German brand will sell electric vehicles.

Over the past 10 years, Norway has invested heavily in renewable energy and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Norwegian government is also offering many incentives for electric vehicles, such as VAT exemptions and the ability to drive in bus and taxi lanes.

This policy has resulted in 64.5% of all cars sold in Norway in 2021 being fully electric.

In the first half of 2022, the best selling electric car in Norway was the Tesla Model Y. It was followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Škoda Enyaq. Interestingly, Tesla Model 3 sales in Norway have declined significantly, probably due to the emergence of new competitors such as the BMW i4 and the start of Tesla Model Y sales with a more comfortable trunk.

Volkswagen currently sells the ID.3 electric hatchback, ID.4 crossover and ID.5 coupe crossover in Norway. The upcoming Volkswagen ID.Buzz minivan is sold out a year in advance.
