Toyota showcased the new development at the American Mobility Center with two Toyota Sienna minivans. One car with a driver performed various maneuvers, and the second car repeated them automatically.
Since the project is still in the early stages of development, there is still a driver in the follower car in case of an emergency, and the system is programmed to maintain a sufficiently large distance. However, as the project develops, the backup driver can be abandoned, and the distances between cars are reduced to a minimum.
Scenarios for the possible use of contactless towing are quite diverse. For example, you can overtake one car while driving another without needing outside help. Or fully load the car with things and use it as a trailer.
In addition, the technology can be applied to trailers with power plants, which will allow small cars like the Corolla and Prius to tow heavy and bulky goods, such as boats and campers.
