Spy shots have emerged of the new Ford Transit Courier, the smallest model in the automaker's Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) lineup, showing that work on the successor to the nine-year-old model is well underway.

The prototype was spotted in Germany, sporting a production body that appears boxier than the current model, with a more angular front fascia. The new Transit Courier is expected to be similar in design to the smaller Tourneo Connect, which is a rebranded version of the Volkswagen Caddy.

According to Motor1 sources, the new Transit Courier will be produced at Ford's Craiova plant in Romania, where the Puma crossover is also currently being assembled. Both the van and the crossover will be available with fully-electric versions, as Ford aims to have a battery-powered option for all of its LCVs by the middle of the decade. The Transit Courier EV is expected to have a 74-kilowatt-hour battery, providing an estimated range of 230 miles (370 kilometers).

While Ford has not released any official information about the new van, it is believed to be based on a modified version of the Puma's platform, which in turn is based on the current Fiesta. The LCV will have five lug nuts, as opposed to its predecessor's four lug-nut setup, which could indicate slightly larger dimensions and higher load capacities. Combustion and electric powertrains are planned, but details are not yet known. A 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is expected to be the core option before the EV arrives.

It's worth noting that the Transit Courier will continue to be a Europe-only model, as it is considered too small for American tastes. The future of smaller Transit vans in the US is uncertain as the automaker has reportedly decided to cancel plans for a Transit Connect replacement.
