Each team is responsible for delivering three CTT prototypes — a M915 Line Haul Tractor and M1088 Medium Tractor, a Palletized Load System (PLS), and Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT). The prototypes will allow the Army to modernize at the pace of industry by incorporating new technologies into existing designs. In addition, creating commonality across the CTT family of vehicles would result in streamlined supply chains and lower total lifecycle costs.
The vendors have seven months to build their respective prototypes before they are evaluated at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland in 2024. Afterward, the program office will present an updated requirements document to the Army Requirements Oversight Council (AROC), which could lead to another “full and open” competition in FY25 for production-representative vehicles based on these updated specifications.
By 2026, the US Army expects to downselect one vendor to award a lucrative production deal estimated at more than $5 billion - though this number has yet to be approved by AROC.
