Rivian to Offer Car-To-Car and Vehicle-To-Home Charging Capability for its EVs

Electric vehicles are known for their innovative features, but not all of them are practical for everyday use. However, the large batteries that these cars are equipped with can serve a more significant purpose. Rivian plans to add two-way charging to all of its vehicles, meaning that their EVs can not only be charged but can also provide power to other cars or homes.

At present, Rivian trucks come with standard 120-volt home outlets, but their capacity is limited. The trucks themselves use CCS plugs, which are capable of two-way charging and are used by the Ford F-150 Lightning to power both cars and homes. The CCS plug has to meet the CCS charging standard, which includes provisions for two-way charging, and Rivian confirmed that its trucks are built to utilize this standard.

It is likely that the two-way charging capability will be enabled through a future software update, rather than a full recall for hardware upgrades. Rivian is known for its transparent communication with its owners and prospective buyers, and the company recently confirmed that every vehicle it has built has the necessary hardware for two-way charging. All it needs is a software update to activate the hardware.

The addition of two-way charging capability will be a major win for Rivian owners, who have been envious of Ford Lightning owners who can power their homes and cars with their EVs. Rivian owners will no longer have to face the mocking glares of Ford Lightning owners, as they will have the same functionality.
