Ford recently unveiled its first MEB-powered vehicle, the Explorer, and confirmed plans for a second MEB model about a year ago. The carmaker aims to sell 600,000 units of this new model over six years, following the Explorer's lead.
The Sun and Autocar reported that Ford plans to revive the Capri name for its second MEB model, citing sources. However, the new model will not be a successor to the legendary sports coupe, but a crossover with a modern design.
"Retro designs aren’t moving us forward. It’s always about a totally new interpretation: that’s what makes it interesting," said Ford’s European chief designer, Amko Leenarts, in an interview with Autocar.
Ford has a history of using iconic brand names for completely different electric model ranges. For example, the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV has little in common with the legendary Mustang coupe. Similarly, the US model Ford Explorer, as a five-meter SUV, has no relation to the newly-presented MEB SUV, which measures 4.45 meters in length.
