Defender Mods, a company known for producing off-road accessories, has created a new kit for the Land Rover Defender that replaces the vehicle's wheels with tank tracks, allowing for a more rugged off-road experience. The kit, called the "Tank Edition," includes four bolt-on tank tracks that mount onto the existing wheel mounting points without modifications to the suspension, thanks to bespoke adapters.
The tracks are made from high-strength, heat-treated, lightweight aluminum, similar to the Land Rover's unibody chassis. Each track weighs approximately 350 pounds (158 kg), and the full set weighs 1,400 pounds (635 kg). The tracks are 16 inches wide and significantly taller than the stock wheels, doubling the Defender's ground clearance to 20 inches (508 mm).
While the Tank Edition offers more freedom in rough terrains such as snow or mud, there are a few limitations. The tracks make it harder to get in and out of the SUV, and they limit the top speed to approximately 40 mph (64 km/h) while on, depending on the terrain. It is not recommended to leave them on while driving on tarmac.
Defender Mods has released 3D-generated previews of the Tank Edition, but the first build has yet to materialize. The company is accepting orders from Land Rover Defender owners and has created a waitlist for the first few kits, which will be available in late 2023. However, the price for the tank tracks has not been announced, but it's expected to be expensive.
