ABT's e-Line division for electric vehicle products has designed the solar modules to give the ID. Buzz extra free electric energy from the sun. However, the limited roof area and complex shapes of the solar modules make it difficult and too cost-intensive to offer the option for the shorter versions. Nonetheless, ABT is currently developing an extension through the vehicle’s side panels that could increase energy production up to 1,000 watts and range up to 2,000 miles per year.
According to ABT, customers can expect up to 600 watts of peak power when all the conditions are optimal. Rough estimates indicate that the energy generated by the roof panels should provide an extra 1,865 miles of range per year without the need for a grid connection. The roof panels could also be used to power onboard equipment like a fridge or interior lighting if installed on an ID. Buzz camper van, which is set to launch after 2025.
Those interested in the solar panel upgrade for their ID. Buzz will have to wait until early 2024 when ABT estimates it will have the modules on production. ABT will work with Volkswagen to carry out the installation in factory conditions, resulting in fewer logistic hurdles and lower prices. However, there is no pricing information available yet.
