The highly anticipated next-generation BMW M5 sedan has been spotted undergoing rigorous testing at the famous Nurburgring race track, and a new spy video reveals some details about it.

Although the vehicle was heavily camouflaged, it is clear that BMW has opted for a more traditional grille design rather than the controversial tall grille seen on recent models. The front fascia remains concealed, suggesting an aggressive bumper design, while the rear end showcased prominent quad tailpipes.

Inside the cabin, the M5 is expected to offer a redesigned layout with BMW's dual-display setup on the dashboard, which includes the latest iDrive software. With rumors circulating about the adoption of the powertrain from the BMW XM, enthusiasts can expect exhilarating performance figures. The XM features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine paired with a single electric motor, generating an impressive 644 horsepower and 800 Nm (590 pound-feet) of torque in its top-tier variant. The range-topping XM Label Red cranks out an astounding 738 hp and 1000 Nm (738 lb-ft).

While the next-generation 5 Series and electric i5 are slated for unveiling later this month, BMW is known for delaying the introduction of the high-performance M models. As a result, the new M5 might not reach dealerships until the following year, with a potential debut expected before the end of this year. Additionally, there are speculations about the possibility of an M5 Touring wagon variant, although it has yet to be spotted during public testing.
