The first instance of this problem was reported by an Outlander owner in Japan back in July 2022. Mitsubishi conducted an investigation and discovered that a specific sequence of vehicle inputs could induce this condition. If drivers shift into reverse within 40 seconds of the infotainment screen booting up and remain in reverse for more than six seconds, the screen may go black.
This glitch is a violation of federal requirements in the United States. As a result, Mitsubishi is initiating a recall of the affected vehicles. Fortunately, the screen will start displaying the rearview camera again after a period of time, although the exact duration has not been specified.
Despite the potential for this issue to occur, Mitsubishi has only received four field reports and two warranty claims related to the problem in the United States. Furthermore, there have been no reported accidents or injuries associated with this camera malfunction.
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander
Starting from June 20, Mitsubishi will contact the owners of 89,907 model year 2022-2023 Outlanders and model year 2023 Outlander PHEVs to inform them about the issue. Owners will be required to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer, where the infotainment system will be reprogrammed with countermeasure software to prevent the screen from going black. This recall work will be performed free of charge for the owners.
