Affected vehicles include approximately 35,401 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs manufactured between January 27, 2021, and April 4, 2023, as well as 53,965 Grand Cherokees built between October 19, 2021, and April 4, 2023.
The recall comes after Jeep launched an investigation following a report of a possible "loss of steering condition." Although the investigation revealed 15 warranty claims related to the steering column problem, there were no records of customer assistance or field reports indicating accidents, injuries, or fatalities resulting from the manufacturing error.
The analysis conducted by Jeep identified a specific group of vehicles produced at the Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack that may have had their steering columns improperly repaired during the assembly process. This incorrect repair could lead to the improper installation of the intermediate shaft, which may eventually disconnect from the u-joint, resulting in a loss of steering control.
To address the issue, Jeep will initiate a voluntary recall of all affected vehicles. Owners will be contacted starting from July 7, and their vehicles will be inspected. If necessary, the intermediate shaft will be replaced to rectify the problem.
