Van Hooydonk, who previously worked under the guidance of Chris Bangle, another figure known for his controversial designs at BMW, acknowledges the feedback received regarding the brand's design direction. In an interview with TopGear, he stated, "We don't ignore the chatter." Despite the controversies, BMW has experienced solid sales figures, selling 2.1 million vehicles worldwide in 2022, with 177,000 units from the BMW M lineup alone.
According to van Hooydonk, the design team recognizes the need for evolution and innovation to ensure future success. He emphasized that their aim is not to repeat existing designs but to introduce new elements. Van Hooydonk clarified, "Sometimes we have to depart and do new things. The reason for that is we also want to have success in 10 years."
Regarding BMW's distinctive front grille, van Hooydonk believes that the brand has explored various iterations, from vertical and slim to wide and low. As a result, they have the flexibility to approach future designs with confidence, leveraging their rich heritage. However, he expects cleaner designs in the future, explaining, "We will design the grille according to the proportion of the overall vehicle or according to the expression that we want to give it."
