Range Energy, a start-up specializing in powered trailers for the trucking industry, showcased its 53-foot (16,1 m) full-scale electric trailer, RA-01, at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo earlier this month. The RA-01 offers versatility for yard operations and significantly reduces the load on a semi-truck's diesel engine.

While several manufacturers such as Daimler, Freightliner, Tesla, and Volvo already have zero-emissions tractor options in their lineup, electric trailers are a relatively new concept. Range Energy believes that these trailers, capable of self-propulsion, can greatly enhance the overall performance of the tractors.

At the core of Range Energy's platform is the electric axle (e-axle), a floor-mounted battery pack, and the company's innovative smart kingpin. The smart kingpin features sensors that detect lateral loads resulting from acceleration and braking, allowing the trailer's e-axle to react with precise torque adjustments, as reported by Elektrek.

Moreover, this integrated system powers auxiliary devices, optimizes the efficiency of the tractor's diesel engine, and even pre-cools the Transportation Refrigeration Unit (TRU), effectively reducing emissions, as stated in the company's press release.

With a generous 200-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the RA-01's e-axle generates an impressive 350 kilowatts (476 horsepower) and over 10,300 pound-feet of torque (14,000 Newton meters). Charging fully in a mere 10.5 hours with 19 kW AC charging, the battery can also achieve the same level of charge with 350 kW DC fast charging in just 45 minutes.

In a test conducted by Eletrek on a smaller prototype, the trailer remained stationary when powered off due to its substantial weight. However, when electrical assistance was activated, the trailer moved effortlessly.

By harnessing its own torque, Range Energy estimates that the RA-01 can reduce diesel expenditure by an impressive 41 percent without incurring additional operational costs. The potential benefits include enhanced maneuverability in tight spaces, quicker acceleration, and improved cargo hauling, especially on inclines.

Furthermore, the addition of control to the rear axle could enhance stability and provide better protection against jackknifing. Additionally, the trailer's regenerative braking system is expected to reduce brake fade and overall fuel consumption of the truck.

It is worth noting that Range Energy's trailer weighs 4,000 pounds (1,814 kg), which could eat into the gross vehicle weight of a Class 8 semi-truck, limited to 80,000 pounds (36,287 kg). However, electric semi-trucks are granted an additional 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of payload capacity by regulation. Since Range Energy's product is a trailer, it does not qualify for this allowance.

The RA-01 is not currently available for purchase, and its pricing remains undisclosed.
