After a two-decade absence, the VW Microbus is making its highly anticipated return to North America in 2024 with the unveiling of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB. This electric minivan, showcased at the largest VW Bus festival in the United States held in Huntington Beach, California, offers an abundance of space and versatility.

With room for up to seven passengers and an expanded luggage compartment, thanks to its 9.8-inch longer wheelbase compared to the standard model, the ID. Buzz LWB is set to impress. With a generous wheelbase of 127.5 inches and a total length of 195.3 inches, the ID. Buzz LWB provides a truly spacious interior. The additional wheelbase is distributed between the widened sliding doors by 7.5 inches and the extended areas between the C-pillars and rear wheels by 2.3 inches. With a drag coefficient of 0.29, Volkswagen proudly claims it as an exceptional value for a minivan. Notably, the North American version features an illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front, adding a unique touch.

While the ID. Buzz LWB maintains a similar appearance to the standard model, the longer wheelbase greatly improves the proportions. Its width and height remain unchanged at 78.1 inches and 75.8 inches, respectively (without exterior mirrors). However, the impact of the extended wheelbase is most noticeable inside the vehicle. It creates additional space for a third row of seats, a more spacious luggage compartment, and a new, larger 85-kilowatt-hour battery, ensuring an extended range.

The ID. Buzz LWB offers various seating configurations, including five-, six-, and seven-seat options. The front seats come standard with adjustable armrests on the inner side, while outer armrests are optional. The top-tier seats offer 12-way power adjustability, as well as massage and memory functions. In North America, the front row will also feature new seat air conditioning for enhanced comfort. The second row consists of a three-passenger bench seat with 40/60 split folding backrests, allowing for flexibility and adjustment. Heated seats are available as an option for the outer seats. Additionally, the second row can be equipped with two individual seats and armrests if preferred. The third row includes two individual seats that can be completely removed when necessary. While the third row is standard in the US, it is optional in Europe and Canada.

In terms of cargo space, the ID. Buzz LWB stands out among electric vehicles, providing ample room for paragliding equipment, bikes, and boards when the second and third rows are folded down. This configuration allows for a maximum load capacity of up to 87.2 cubic feet (2,469 liters). In a five-seater setup, the trunk offers a capacity of 47.3 cubic feet (1,340 liters) when loaded to the upper edge of the backrests, providing an additional 7.7 cubic feet (219 liters) compared to the standard wheelbase model. With seven occupants on board, the trunk volume measures 10.8 cubic feet (306 liters) behind the third-row seats.

The ID. Buzz LWB introduces exciting new interior features, including a head-up display and an enhanced infotainment system powered by the latest ID. software. With a new 12.9-inch display and a 5.3-inch digital instrument panel controlled from the multifunction steering wheel, the operation becomes simpler, more intuitive, and highly customizable. The main display's touch sliders for temperature and volume settings now feature illumination. The cabin also boasts standard 10-color ambient lighting, while an optional upgrade offers 30-color variations. Moreover, the panoramic sunroof, Volkswagen's largest glass roof to date, covers both the first and second rows of seats and features electronically controlled tinting. The ID. Buzz LWB further enhances convenience with electrically sliding door windows, along with optional electric opening and closing for the sliding doors and tailgate.

Under the hood, the ID. Buzz LWB offers two battery options: an 82-kWh (77 kWh usable) pack and a new 91-kWh (85 kWh usable) battery. While exact range estimates have not been disclosed, Volkswagen announces the inclusion of the new APP550 rear-axle drive unit for the ID. Buzz, delivering 210 kilowatts (282 horsepower) and 413 pound-feet (560 Newton-meters) of torque to the rear wheels. This upgrade enables a top speed of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour) and reduces the 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) acceleration time to 7.9 seconds. For those seeking even more performance, the GTX all-wheel-drive version will debut in late 2024, featuring 250 kW (335 hp) and a swift 0-62 mph time of 6.4 seconds.

Charging the ID. Buzz LWB is now faster than ever, with DC fast charging capacity of up to 200 kW. This allows the large battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 25 minutes. The vehicle's new thermal management system enables battery preconditioning, while a heat pump enhances efficiency during winter conditions.

Volkswagen plans to begin deliveries of the ID. Buzz LWB in the United States in 2024, shipping from their manufacturing facility in Hanover, Germany. Further details, including US pricing, specifications, and range estimates, will be announced closer to the launch date.
