The Tesla Model S Plaid has once again proven its dominance on the Nürburgring Nordschleife as it sets a new lap record for production electric vehicles with an impressive 7:25.231. Equipped with the Track Package, the Model S Plaid shaved more than eight seconds off the previous record held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.

Since the introduction of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, the Nurburgring lap record for production electric vehicles has been a hotly contested battle between Porsche and Tesla. The Taycan Turbo S took the crown from the Tesla Model S Plaid in 2022, surpassing its previous record by over two seconds. However, Tesla was not ready to back down.

On June 2, a Tesla Model S Plaid equipped with the Track Package roared onto the Nurburgring and shattered the existing lap record. With a remarkable time of 7:25.231, the Model S Plaid reclaimed its title and left the competition in the dust. This achievement places the Model S Plaid in the prestigious company of iconic gas-powered vehicles such as the Ferrari Enzo and the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series.

So, what made the difference for the Model S Plaid this time around? The answer lies in the Track Package, which brought a range of performance enhancements to the already impressive electric sedan. The Track Package includes upgraded brakes, specialized tires, and the unlocking of a top speed of 200 mph.

The aluminum forged Zero-G wheels and track-ready Goodyear Supercar 3R tires provide enhanced grip and control on the demanding Nurburgring circuit. Complementing these improvements is a carbon ceramic brake kit featuring carbon-silicon carbide rotors, one-piece forged calipers, high-performance pads, and track-ready brake fluid. The Track Package ensures that the Model S Plaid is optimized for the rigors of high-speed track driving.

While the Track Package undoubtedly played a significant role in the Model S Plaid's record-breaking lap, there is another factor that should not be overlooked—the presence of a round steering wheel. The previous Model S Plaid record run featured the controversial yoke steering wheel, which garnered mixed reviews and concerns about its safety and effectiveness for track driving.

To experience the thrilling lap that secured the Model S Plaid's victory, Tesla has shared onboard footage of the record-setting run. The video showcases the incredible acceleration and speed of the Model S Plaid as it reaches an impressive 179.5 miles per hour (289 kilometers per hour). The combination of raw power, precision handling, and advanced aerodynamics is evident throughout the lap, highlighting why the Model S Plaid is the ultimate contender on the track.
