Kia has announced a recall of 121,411 Niro Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) in the U.S. due to a potential fire risk caused by a short circuit in the clutch actuator. The issue has led to localized heat damage and raises concerns about the possibility of fire incidents.

The automaker first became aware of the problem in January when reports of an incident involving the hybrid warning light and localized heat damage to a Niro Hybrid's hydraulic clutch actuator connector and harness were received. Further evaluations in May revealed corrosion on the printed circuit board near the melting area, attributed to fluid contamination from a potential external source. This contamination resulted in a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fortunately, no fires have been reported in customers' vehicles yet. However, three confirmed and seven potential cases of localized melting due to the short circuit were identified.

To address the safety concern, Kia will begin a recall campaign starting on September 29. Owners of all 2017-2022 Kia Niro hybrids and 2018-2022 Kia Niro PHEVs will be asked to return their vehicles to nearby dealerships. The hydraulic clutch actuator will be thoroughly inspected, and if necessary, replaced. Additionally, all vehicles will receive a replacement fuse with a different resistance to mitigate the fire risk.
