The current generation of the Grand Cherokee made its debut in 2020, followed by the longer Grand Cherokee L in early 2021. However, IIHS awards only apply to 2023 models, specifically Grand Cherokees manufactured after March 2023, and for Grand Cherokee L versions, the production date is shifted to May 2023.
The IIHS reports that Jeep has implemented structural modifications to the undercarriage of their SUV to correct a substantial fuel leak issue experienced during previous crash tests. These modifications prevent sheet metal from piercing the fuel tank, a problem that was encountered in earlier versions. Additionally, IIHS notes that Jeep made changes to how the headlights are adjusted across all Grand Cherokee trims.
As a result, 2023 models manufactured after the mentioned dates are rated good in all IIHS crash tests. This includes overlap front crash tests on both the driver and passenger sides, as well as side-impact testing. Regarding lighting, the alterations made by Jeep provide the Grand Cherokee with either good or acceptable ratings for all trims.
To receive the Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have standard-issue frontal crash prevention systems that earn advanced or superior ratings for collisions involving pedestrians. The 2023 Grand Cherokee in standard and L format received an advanced rating during daytime operation, and a superior rating after dark. Jeep provides this system on all Grand Cherokee trim levels, thus resulting in the Top Safety Pick + award.
