While the spotlight at the 2023 IAA Munich was on the unveiling of Mercedes' Concept CLA Class, another significant reveal took place. CEO Ola Källenius verified that a scaled-down version of the G-Class is in the works.

At the Munich Motor Show, where the Concept CLA was revealed, Mercedes-Benz officially acknowledged that they are working on a compact version of the G-Class, affectionately dubbed the "Little G." A teaser image of this upcoming off-road vehicle was also showcased during the event.

At this preliminary stage, not much is known about the smaller G-Class. CEO Ola Källenius noted its release is set for "a few years" down the line, though no exact launch date has been specified.

“We have something in store for G fans around the world. Actually, tonight we are going to announce that there will be a ‘Little G.’ So, the daughter or son of the ‘Big G’ is also going to come to G fans around the world in a few years from now,” Kallenius said.

A sneak peek of the new model confirms it will sport a boxy design similar to its larger G-Class counterpart, albeit with smaller dimensions. The vehicle will be known as the g-Class, with a lowercase "g," to emphasize its reduced size.

Earlier this year, speculation around the compact G-Class resurfaced following claims from a German media outlet that the model is targeted for a 2026 release. Insiders indicate that the vehicle will utilize Mercedes’ forthcoming MMA platform. There's also chatter that it could be offered exclusively as an electric vehicle, featuring an 800-volt electrical system. Its size is expected to be larger than a Suzuki Jimny but possibly comparable to a Jeep Wrangler. Whether it will come as a two-door or four-door model remains uncertain.
