Next-generation BMW X2 teased for first time with illuminated grille

BMW has released the first teaser of the new X2, which - although short and shadowy - reveals interesting design details.

The short video here was published on Instagram by Domagoj Dukec - the head of the design department at BMW. It shows the X2 from the side, and we can see its coupe-like profile at the rear, with a sloping roofline and an even more sloping tailgate. A smooth static spoiler adds the finishing touch.

The car then turns to reveal its front end. Here we see the illuminated grille, which has a different shape compared to the current X1. To a certain extent, they look more like the grilles found on the facelifted X6, although the proportions seem to be slightly different. The headlights, on the other hand, feature C-shaped LED daytime running lights.

Under its refreshed exterior, the next-generation X2 will ride on BMW's FAAR platform, which is also used by the current X1 and other models. There won't be any engines with more than four cylinders, with the range-topping M35i xDrive model likely to feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor producing 315 horsepower. The lower end variants will feature gasoline and diesel engines depending on the region, with some sort of electrification available for many of them.

Finally, BMW is also working on an all-electric iX2 that will be produced in Germany along with the iX1 starting later this year. There's nothing official coming from the automaker regarding the specifications of this zero-emission crossover, but it will likely share its powertrain with the iX1, meaning two electric motors will generate 313 horsepower and 494 Nm of torque.
