Nikola Motor has launched its hydrogen fuel-cell truck in the USA. The launch event was held at Nikola's manufacturing facility in Coolidge, Arizona. The company will now concentrate on delivering the trucks.

Nikola officially launched commercial sales of its hydrogen fuel cell electric truck at its manufacturing facility in Coolidge, Arizona. The ceremony was attended by fleet customers, dealers from Nikola's sales and service network, government officials, prominent Phoenix business and community leaders, and the dedicated Nikola team.

To date, Nikola has received 223 non-binding orders for the hydrogen fuel cell truck from a total of 23 customers, including fleet operators such as J.B. Hunt, AJR Trucking, Biagi Bros, TTSI and BayoTech. "As we head into the fourth quarter, we are focused on delivering our trucks at scale," said Steve Girsky, Nikola's president and chief executive officer.

Following the completion of the Phase 2 assembly expansion at the Coolidge manufacturing facility, with a versatile mixed-model line capable of producing both hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric trucks, the facility is poised to reach an annual production capacity of approximately 2,400 trucks on three shifts.

Progress is also being made on the Coolidge fuel cell power module assembly line, which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of this year, with Bosch supplying the modules.

Nikola's hydrogen fuel cell EV has a claimed maximum range of 500 miles (804 kilometers), while its electric motors deliver an output of 536 horsepower. One of the advantages over battery electric trucks is the short refueling time of just 20 minutes.

There was no mention of the cost of the vehicle, but the press release noted the many subsidies available that would reduce its cost - in California, New York State, Canada, and British Columbia, not to mention the $40,000 Clean Commercial Vehicle Tax Credit per vehicle from the U.S. government's Inflation Reduction Act.
