While Volvo has primarily focused on SUVs in recent years, the EM90 breaks that pattern as the Swedish brand's first-ever minivan. It features sliding doors on both sides for easy access.
Leveraging its association with the expansive Geely corporate group, the Volvo EM90 shares many similarities with the Zeekr 009, albeit with a more subdued exterior design.
Rolling on 19- or 20-inch wheels with an aerodynamically optimized appearance, the EM90 presents a revised front fascia compared to the Zeekr 009. It adopts a more understated illuminated "grille" and incorporates new headlights inspired by those on the EX90 electric SUV. The minivan's profile hints at its origins, while the rear receives subtle updates with new taillights that extend onto the pillars, aligning with Volvo's design language.

This sleek minivan offers seating for six across three rows, with the middle row featuring a pair of comfortable, lounge-like ventilated seats that can slide fore and aft. A 15.6-inch screen descends from the headliner, though some may find it relatively small compared to the BMW 7 Series, which boasts a larger 31.3-inch display that folds down from the ceiling.
The 15.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system takes center stage, providing access to most functions, as physical controls are kept to a minimum. It is accompanied by a fully digital instrument cluster, which has become the industry standard. Volvo highlights that the rear seats can transform into a "theatre, meeting room, or a bedroom" at the push of a button or via voice command, allowing adjustments to windows, seats, screens, lighting, and air conditioning. The 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system aims to turn the EM90 into a "private concert hall on the move."

The EM90's power comes from an electric motor located at the rear, delivering 268 hp (200 kW), enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.3 seconds. While the Volvo EM90 is currently available in a rear-wheel-drive configuration, the Zeekr 009 offers a more potent dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with an impressive 536 hp and a 4.5-second sprint time.
Both models feature a substantial 116-kWh battery pack that can be rapidly charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. The maximum range is claimed to be 738 kilometers (459 miles) in the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), though real-world range may be shorter. Similar to the EX90, this emissions-free minivan supports bidirectional charging, allowing it to charge other vehicles or home appliances.
The EM90 is notably large, measuring 5,206 millimeters (205 inches) in length, 2,024 mm (79.6 in) in width, and 1,859 mm (73.1 in) in height. It boasts a substantial wheelbase of 3,205 mm (126 in) and weighs in at 2,763 kilograms (6,091 pounds).
Volvo has made the EM90 available for pre-order in China, where it competes with other high-end minivans like the Lexus LM and the Buick GL8. Additional markets are also being considered.
