Chinese automakers have been expanding aggressively worldwide, and Changan is no exception. The latest move in its global expansion plan involves introducing the Deepal sub-brand to the European market.

Deepal has unveiled its first new energy hardcore off-road SUV model, the Deepal G318. This rugged vehicle is expected to have a price tag of around 300,000 yuan (~$42,000 USD). Deepal, an NEV (new energy vehicle) brand launched by Changan in 2022, has recently begun sales in Thailand and aims to sell 450,000 units globally this year.

Notably, the name "318" is inspired by a national highway in China, known as the Sichuan-Tibet line, stretching from Chengdu to Tibet. This route has gained popularity for road trips to Tibet, which might have influenced Deepal's choice of name, targeting adventure enthusiasts.

The Deepal G318 is positioned as a medium-sized SUV, with dimensions of 4750/1959/1820 mm and a wheelbase of 2880 mm. Leaked information suggests that the G318 is an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) featuring a 1.5-liter engine that doesn't transmit torque directly to the wheels. It incorporates two electric motors with rated powers of 35 kW and 60 kW, with the peak power output yet to be disclosed. The G318 offers two LFP battery options: 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh.

In terms of design, the Deepal G318 follows the classic square shape of off-road vehicles. Its front profile is distinctly square, featuring C-shaped LED headlights, a sizable enclosed front panel, and a robust lower bumper. The rear boasts an external spare tire, and the tailgate is expected to open sideways, complemented by C-shaped taillights mirroring the headlights. Notably, the G318 will support towing and tank turn mode, allowing the vehicle to execute a 360-degree turn on the spot.

While detailed powertrain specifications remain undisclosed, it's confirmed that an extended-range hybrid setup will be employed.
