It's essential to note that the Lightning Switchgear isn't slated for production. Ford classifies it as a "demonstrator vehicle," drawing parallels with other audacious projects like the SuperVan, F-100 Eluminator, and Mustang Mach-E 1400. This truck serves as a testing ground for engineers, developed in collaboration with RTR, to experiment with and gain insights into electric vehicles (EVs). These insights are expected to shape future road-worthy projects.
Unlike the aforementioned projects, the Switchgear retains its original powertrain. Notably, the Lightning boasts a formidable 580 horsepower and a staggering 775 pound-feet (1,054 Nm) of torque with its Extended Range battery pack. What sets the Switchgear apart are the upgrades underneath and the revamped exterior. It boasts a wider track, enhanced ground clearance, and substantially increased suspension travel. The front features a bespoke double-wishbone suspension, while the rear boasts a multi-link independent suspension with coilover shocks. A unique stabilizer bar and custom control arms complete the rear suspension setup.

Speaking of shocks, the Switchgear equips Fox 3-inch diameter internal bypass shocks on all corners, along with specially designed front and rear bumpers to improve approach and departure angles. It rides on 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires mounted on 18-inch wheels and features a rack capable of carrying two spare wheels and tires. Ford asserts that it offers 11 inches of front wheel travel and 13 inches in the rear.
The Switchgear's appearance is elevated thanks to carbon composite front fenders, bed sides, and a rear bumper. It's equipped with steel rock rails, a steel front bumper, and a steel front skid plate for enhanced durability. While most of the interior mirrors the standard F-150 Lightning, it upgrades to Recaro Sportster ORV seats for all five passengers, complete with six-point harnesses.
