MG has officially unveiled the new generation of its most compact and affordable model, the MG3.

The MG3 compact hatchback has undergone significant visual and technological changes. The car will be available in Europe exclusively with a new 194 hp (143 kW) self-charging hybrid powertrain.

Overall, the new MG3 follows the design features of the larger MG5 and MG7. At 4,113 mm in length, 1,797 mm in width and 1,502 mm in height, the new MG3 is slightly longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. According to the company, this increase results in a roomier cabin and a 293-litre boot.

As for the chassis, MG engineers have added new "ultra-high stiffness components" that, together with a new suspension setup, improve handling, ride smoothness and noise isolation over the previous generation.

The digitalised driver's seat includes a 7-inch dashboard and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment screen as standard with navigation and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay connectivity. Notable on the centre console are fairly large physical keys, four USB ports and additional buttons on the steering wheel. Safety equipment includes the MG Pilot ADAS package with systems such as adaptive cruise control.

The new MG3 will be available exclusively in a hybrid version. The Hybrid+ system consists of a four-cylinder 1.5-litre 102 hp (75 kW) petrol engine, one 136 hp (100 kW) electric motor, a 1.83 kWh battery and a three-speed automatic transmission. Three driving modes are available - Eco, Standard and Sport, with the latter enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is 4.4 litres/100 km.

Competitors for the new MG3 include hybrids such as the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio and Honda Jazz. The Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, Hyundai i20, VW Polo, Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza are also in the same class, but they can be either hybrid or with non-electrified internal combustion engines.

MG has yet to announce pricing for the new MG3. In the UK, it is expected to start at £20,000 (around €23,370).
